The DAWN is the first erotic drama by Nikos Kazantzakis, written for the theater in 1906 and submitted in 1907 to the Pantelideio Drama Competition of the National University of Athens.
The play describes the moral dilemma and emotional torment of the central heroine, Lalo, who is trapped by her personal desires and imposed societal propriety. Kazantzakis clearly writes the text influenced by his time, while its theme is similar to the plot of Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina.
This edition is the first annotated version of the erotic play by Nikos Kazantzakis, the editing of which was based directly on the manuscript of the drama, as submitted to the Pantelideio Drama Competition and now preserved in the National Library of Greece.
The book is published with a scholarly introduction, while the Appendix includes the two surviving manuscripts of the play, a brief note from the editors, and rich informational material.
