Description & Specifications

Was there an attempt to establish a surrealist group in Greece during the interwar period? If so, in what context? Finally, why was this attempt unsuccessful?

In an effort to answer these questions, the author examines texts and historical documents from the era, most of which come from the remains of Andreas Empeirikos. Among them are various versions of a manuscript by the latter, a continuation of the '35 Lecture, in which surrealism is considered the quintessential dynamic of every uprising and revolution, and the relationship between surrealism, the communist revolution, and anarchy is explored.

Attempting a sketch of the history of surrealism in Greece, the author focuses on the repressed relationship between Empeirikos and Kallas, both by themselves and by critics. Most studies tend to dissociate the two poets. In contrast, the elements presented in this book show that they were companions in the attempt to establish surrealism in Greece and that they were connected by a warm friendship, which was interrupted by a rupture, with personal and theoretical dimensions.

In the content of this relationship and the causes of the rupture, the author finds an interpretive key to the history of Greek surrealism. The issue of authenticity, psychological and temperamental correlations, are intricately woven with the way each of the two poets perceives love, sadism, revolution, and fascism, both in relation to psychoanalysis and surrealism, as well as amid the whirlwind of historical events of that time: the Metaxas dictatorship, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II.
