This study is fully integrated into the framework of Modern Greek dialectology and represents the only contemporary description of the dialect of the city of Larissa and its surrounding villages, an area for which there is an unprecedented lack of linguistic data.
It is one of the few descriptions of a Greek dialect that records, based on the principles of modern scientific description, the most significant phonetic, phonological, morphological, and syntactic phenomena, and the only one concerning the Thessalian dialect.
This book contributes:
- to the preservation of the dialect of Larissa, which is in a phase of decline, and allows the reader to connect with the linguistic reality of a previous era
- to the recording and identification of the distinctive features of the dialect of Larissa and brings to light phenomena that have not been identified or described in modern linguistic terms
- to Modern Greek dialectology, by comparing data that allow for a more complete distinction and classification of the northern Greek dialects
“... A substantive and original contribution to the field of Modern Greek dialectology. A product of primary research, it decisively enriches our knowledge of the local variety of Larissa and responds to the need to preserve a world that is fading away.” From the Preface by Christos Klairis.
