The secret advisor Matthias Clausen, a successful entrepreneur with rare intellectual cultivation and a respected member of the local community, after much time and effort manages to revive from the mourning of his widowhood. As he approaches the twilight of his life, he sees in the face of the young Inken his last chance for happiness.
However, their noble feeling becomes the reason for extreme reactions to erupt within his family environment, which is primarily concerned about the fate of the paternal inheritance. The climax of these reactions will prove fatal for the sensitive Matthias.
The first (and so far only) Greek translation of the drama Before Sunset by Gerhart Hauptmann was made by Nikos Kazantzakis for our National Theatre, which staged it (1936-1942) with great success, but without the final Act, perhaps to avoid further scandalizing the moral values of the time.
This volume publishes for the first time the text of the Kazantzakis translation (Acts A-D), together with the missing Act E translated by Evy Petropoulou. The comments and photographs illuminate the author and the timeless appeal of his work.
