Description

The question "who is a Greek citizen" constitutes a quintessential open question. A question that has been posed, since the beginnings of the Greek state, for many contradictory answers, as well as for multiple interpretations.

By what criteria is someone considered a Greek citizen, from the origins of the Greek state to the present? Are these criteria the same since the existence of the national political community of Greeks, or do they change? Are they similar to those used by other nations, and to what extent?

Correspondingly, by what criteria does someone become Greek, while they are not? And these, in turn, have remained the same throughout the last two centuries of Greek history? How often and why do they change? For whom do they change, whom do they (not) concern, and what similar criteria of integration into a political community are compared?

What other connotations are there in being Greek, beyond the strict legal bond of the state with the individual, for the state itself? What does the state expect from its citizens? How susceptible are these expectations to change?

How filled is this bond, that is, citizenship, with ideology? With what intensity do these connotations change throughout history, what do they reveal, what do they reproduce, and what do they conceal? How do these issues compare with political entities in Greece?

Such are the questions that preoccupy the present book, which proposes a brief journey through the history of the Greek state from the perspective of citizenship, culminating in the present and the modern challenges that the regime of Greek citizenship has to face.

In a country that has entered a phase of politically more unpredictable and fiscally harsher macroeconomic conditions, which it seems will endure after the great adventures of the 20th century, the question "who is a Greek citizen" is worth raising. A question that, ultimately, inescapably forges the common destiny of people living in this place, even in the most difficult moments. Or, perhaps, especially in those.
