Next to the polonaises and waltzes, the mazurkas are the third form of dance cultivated by Chopin in his music. They constitute the largest of these three groups, with almost 60 pieces. Chopin used the mazurka style from his childhood until the last years of his life. These works testify not only to Chopin's love for his homeland Poland but also to the composer's deep understanding of the psychology of his people. He drew inspiration from the various types of mazurka found in different regions of Poland but transformed them into pure music with the highest elegance, refined harmonies, and rhythmic power.
