Description

The presence of Alexander on the world stage marks for the first time a new dynamic of war, in which the might of numbers lost its value and humbly bowed before the heroic spirit of the Greeks.

We usually focus on Alexander's military exploits and his frantic advance from Pella to India, China, and the Himalayas. However, we overlook Alexander as a man, the king, the ruler, the general, the soldier, who threw himself first into battle as a simple soldier, as an equal among equals. These were unprecedented virtues for a leader, virtues that intoxicated the Macedonian phalanx following him without ever asking why. The king's desire was for them a divine command.

For Alexander, while there may not have been a Homer to exalt his feats and greatness, there were, as if by divine necessity, over thirty-two thousand writers who wrote books with more than fifteen hundred titles about him and continue to write, most of whom are admirers of his heroic figure. No similar phenomenon has occurred for any other real or mythical figure in human history.

I will not deal with the warrior Alexander but with Alexander the incomparable man, the unsurpassed leader, the great philosopher, the charismatic ruler, the unparalleled king, just as he is presented by the historians of antiquity from the day of his incarnation until the day of his death. I will absolve him with historical arguments from all the outrageous slanders, the fabricated lies, and the nonexistent passions that his malicious critics arbitrarily attribute to him.

I have already read it three times since the day I bought it and I will do it again. It is a wonderful book and provides a lot of information about Alexander's complex personality. It should not be missing from any library.
