Description

Museums belong to the iconic buildings of the early 21st century, both for their architectural heterogeneity and for the range of cultural goals they serve. The questions raised by the book are: How does architecture influence the way we experience museums? How is it related to the art of exhibition design? According to the author, the answer lies largely through space.

Approaching space as a common language of the building and the exhibition allows us to understand more deeply the unique spatial, visual, mental, and social character of each museum. The author explains, for example, how some museums create a sense of personal exploration for visitors, while others have a primarily educational character. How does the visit to certain museums transform into a spatial experience, while in others it becomes a social event.

The book begins with a historical overview of the evolution of the museum as a building and as an organized space, as well as the parallel evolution of exhibition concepts. It then focuses on an in-depth study of selected contemporary museums, analyzing the architecture of the space, the exhibition rationale, and visitor behavior.

By combining intuitive observation with detailed description and analysis, it develops a methodology for the study of museums and concludes by proposing a theoretical model for their interpretation. Theoretically equipped, methodologically innovative, and richly illustrated, this book is an essential work for those who create and study museums (architects, curators, and museologists, students) as well as for those who visit museums and constitute their audience.
