CLASSIC HANDMADE WORRY BEADS

The worry beads are one of the most characteristic objects of Greek and broader Mediterranean culture. It has a long history, starting from antiquity and extending across various civilizations. From its religious use in India and the Middle East to its transformation into a tool for relaxation and meditation in Greece, worry beads maintain their unique position in our culture and tradition.

The worry beads have their roots in the prayer beads used by monks of the Orthodox Church, which were used for prayer and concentration. However, the use of beads on a string is much older and can be traced back to many ancient civilizations, where worry beads held religious or mystical significance.

In the Middle East and the Islamic world, the "misbakh" or "tasbih" were used, types of prayer beads that served for counting prayers and psalms. The worry beads made their way into the Ottoman Empire, where they became particularly popular among the upper classes. In Greece, the worry beads spread primarily during the period of the Ottoman Empire and became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Greek worry beads differ from the prayer beads of other cultures, as they do not follow a specific number of beads. In traditional Greek cafés, men held them in their hands, expressing their personality. A man playing with his worry beads showed that he was calm and in control of the moment.

Today, worry beads remain a beloved object for many people and are used as:

  • Object of relaxation and concentration
  • Collectible piece
  • Personal talisman or symbol of strength and prestige
  • Decorative accessory and element of tradition

The worry beads symbolize the Greek way of life and the need for moments of relaxation amidst the stress of everyday life.
