History of the Worry Bead – A Journey Through Time and Tradition

The worry bead is one of the most characteristic objects of Greek and broader Mediterranean culture. It has a long and fascinating history that dates back to antiquity and spans various cultures. The worry bead has its roots in the prayer beads of the monks of the Orthodox Church, which were used for prayer and focus. However, the practice of using beads on a thread is much older and can be traced back to many ancient cultures.

The earliest references to the use of beads in a similar form can be found in India, China, and the Arab world, where worry beads had religious or mystical significance. In the Middle East and the Islamic world, “misbaha” or “tasbeeh” were used for counting prayers and psalms. With the expansion of trade routes, prayer beads transitioned to the Ottoman Empire, where they became popular among the upper classes.

In Greece, the worry bead spread mainly during the Ottoman Empire, but became particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Greek worry bead differs from the prayer beads of other cultures, as it does not follow a specific number of beads nor is it used by strict rules. During the decades of the 1920s to the 1950s, the worry bead became particularly popular among men, especially among old “manges,” rebetes, and café-goers.
