Description

After a century and a half of research, the formative stages of Mycenaean civilization during the Late Bronze Age in southern Greece have not yet been clarified. This book by Jack L. Davis, co-director along with Sharon R. Stocker of the ongoing excavations at the Palace of Nestor in Mycenaean Pylos, focuses on this period of beginnings, between 1600 and 1400 B.C.

J. L. Davis and S. Stocker document that Pylos was a major hub for the exchange of ideas between the already established Minoan civilization of Crete and the Greek mainland: Messenia was the area where the population of the mainland was first centered with a "Cretan graft" and adopted the ideological/conceptual and technological tools necessary for the organized political entity of Mycenaean Pylos to develop, around the powerful figure of a wanax, surrounded by military and religious splendor.

Perhaps such a wanax of the 15th century B.C. was the famous Griffin Warrior, whose tomb was uncovered in 2015 by the excavators of Pylos, providing valuable archaeological and historical evidence.

However, the book is not just a typical "case study." The author reviews the entire history of archaeological research in Pylos, seeks correlations with more recent historical periods, such as the Ottoman, to find interpretative tools, connects his personal apprenticeship and journey in archaeological research with the development of archaeological science in recent decades, and ultimately presents how archaeology produces knowledge, how the way we understand archaeological findings changes over time, and how it is shaped by personal experiences in the academic field and in the field.
