Description

From a shark attack survivor to their greatest advocate, Paul de Gelder explains why these majestic and diverse creatures need our help just as much as we need theirs.

Something happens inside you the first time you dive with sharks…

We have a lasting fascination with sharks. Presented in the media and culture as killing machines, they leave us in awe of their power and strength. But the shark is so much more - a marvel of the sea, they have evolved into over 500 species in the last 450 million years, from the bioluminescent kitefin shark to the tiny dwarf lantern shark, the social lemon shark to the cow shark, which can give birth to up to 100 pups in a single litter. Bringing balance to the ocean ecosystem, our planet is in serious danger when these remarkable creatures are threatened.

Paul de Gelder, who lost two limbs in a shark attack during a mission as a specialist diver for the Australian Navy, spent time during his recovery learning everything about sharks. He became so obsessed that, despite what happened to him, he is now an expert and has dedicated his life to trying to save them. His book "Shark" is his love letter to these unfairly stigmatized animals and his warning to the world about what will happen if we don't take care of them.
