The Palm-O-Trap is designed for monitoring the presence and density of the red palm weevil (Rynchophorus ferrugineus). The set includes the container with holes on the side, a bait vial (molasses), and a pheromone dispenser bag (an additional bait vial and pheromone dispenser bag are provided as replacements).

Trap Installation:

• Place the plastic trap on the ground 1-1.5 meters from the trunk of the palm in a pit, so that the openings on the sides are at approximately ground level.
• Pierce the plastic bag of the pheromone dispenser with wire under the seam and hang it from the center of the trap's plastic cover.
• Prepare a 15% molasses solution in water and place a cup of it in an open plastic container at the bottom of the trap.
• Cover the trap with the lid and secure it tightly.
• Install one trap for every 1 or 2 acres to monitor the population of the beetle.
• Monitor the captures weekly and dispose of the captured beetles.
• Change the molasses solution and the pheromone dispenser every six weeks at the latest.

Evaluation of Captures:

• If no beetles are captured, there is no risk in your area.
• If you capture 1-2 per week, establish a denser network of traps to catch more beetles and reduce the risk.
• If you capture more than 8-10 per week, you must take drastic measures in consultation with state agricultural specialists.
