The French cellist Félix Battanchon (1814-93) was the principal cellist in the Grand Opéra orchestra in Paris. He is known to have composed approximately 40 works, mainly salon pieces for one to three cellos, as well as several collections of studies. The “12 Etudes in the Thumb Position” are available in a new edition by Martin Rummel. They are suitable as an introduction to playing in the thumb position, as well as for advanced study of this area of cello playing.
