Salep is made from the roots of a plant that was known in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean regions, called Orchis. It was attributed aphrodisiac properties and remained in popular tradition as a male herb.

Salep is a warming drink, preventive of colds and flu, and soothes the upset stomach. It relaxes the nerves, alleviates anxiety, as well as physical and mental fatigue. It is rich in starch and valuable minerals, such as phosphorus and calcium. It tones the entire body and helps weakened organisms recover and heal more quickly.
