Description

It was the time when the first guerrilla groups began to form in the mountains of Pontus, particularly in Western Pontus. Much has been written by various historians and authors about the reasons these guerrilla groups were formed, so there is no need for us to repeat them. What we note is that, at that time, the official Greek State could not or did not want to help, for its own reasons, the Greek guerrillas in Pontus. On its part, the Turkish Government, responsible for its citizens, did not contribute to the smooth and unhindered coexistence among the citizens of various ethnicities within the Turkish State. The Hellenism of Pontus was continuously bleeding, in agony. And then, on the brink of the abyss, the miracle happened. From the depths of the martyred Pontic people, whose reserves of patience had been exhausted, the first spark of resistance sprang and warmed hope. The Pontic Hellenism awakened, was put on alert, and with weapons in hand, fought to protect their lives and the lives of their children. In those years, School and Church became synonymous concepts. The priest and the teacher were the strong supports of the suffering Pontic people until the exterminating persecutions against them began. And then, the wild and relentless armed struggle broke out. The land bled daily, violence reigned from end to end, Pontus was in agony. At this critical moment, the women of Pontus showed the full grandeur of their contribution and made their spirit a bastion of patriotism and a breakwater against the plans of the Turks. Simple women of the people of all ages, even bent old women, stood with courage and inflamed the hearts of the young men with the torch of their own soul. They became consoling Madonnas in the unequal struggle and trials and the sacrificial victims. They enthusiastically ignited the hearts of the warriors and supplied them with bread and bullets. They fought alongside them, bandaging their wounds and, as messengers, carried various useful information for the movements of the guerrillas. Thus, they also emerged as pioneers of victory, giving everything for the suffering Pontic people and the Homeland, without asking for anything. Thus, modestly and quietly, almost completely forgotten, they passed into the margins of official history. Wherever you turn on the Pontic land, you discern clots of blood and sacrifices of its women. Today, as we breathe freedom, as we live in days of peace, let our thoughts reverently turn back to those modest ones, who were equally great among the times that passed, equally fearless in the misfortunes that struck them, and so today we pay tribute and gratitude to the modesty of these women of the Pontic struggle.
