Published by "Thermaikos" editions is the book by Eleni Malliari titled "The Return". The author transports us to a future society ‒which is not that far from the current one‒ and describes the daily life of a man, Haris Polemis, who lives in a dystopian regime, ruled by the class of Manufacturers, followed by the classes of Stateists and Workers.
The Stateists live in organized blocks, and everyone works ‒with very few exceptions‒ from home, with time spent on digital games and experiential simulations being the currency. Part of the Manufacturers' class lives in Antigia, colonies on other planets, where they enjoy real food and live carefree and blissfully.
Stateists and Workers can travel to Antigia, provided they incur their travel expenses, and are compelled to work as servants, farmers, or shepherds, fully dependent on the Manufacturers in order to repay their debts.
The awakening of the hero, who belongs to the Stateist class, gradually occurs after the abandonment by his wife. Hurriedly, he applies for a loan to move to Antigia, but when his application is approved, he is faced with the dilemma of the slavery he will choose.
One evening, seeking tranquility, he takes a long walk at the foothills of the nearby mountain. However, he loses his bearings and finds himself in front of a community's celebration ‒one of those he has heard live disconnected from the regime‒ with primitive production methods, led by a chief, a senate, and common goods arising from exchange and collective labor.
His contact with this group of people and the reaction of the official regime will reveal to him the fascism, manipulation, and absurdity in which he has lived all these years.
