Rome's victory in the Cimbrian War came after a series of huge and devastating defeats by the Germanic tribes, primarily the Cimbri and the Teutons, who migrated massively southwards in the late 2nd century BC. These included the 113 BC defeat of the consul Gnaeus Papirius Carbo at Noreia, the crushing of Marcus Junius Silanus' army near Burdigala in 109 BC, and the humiliating disaster of two armies near Arausio (Orange) four years later.

This work explores how, in the autumn of 105 BC, Gaius Marius was able to contain the Germanic threat from the north before annihilating it in two successful battles, at Aquae Sextiae in 102 BC and at Vercellae in 101 BC.

Filled with stunning illustrations covering the main clashes of this epic and protracted war of the late Republic, this work brings to life for the first time the essential quelling of the Germanic threat to Rome's very existence. It also documents the rise of Marius, one of Rome's most significant military figures, who was pivotal in reforming its armed forces.
