So far, the best thing found to avoid dying young is old age. Only that, when it is not accompanied by illnesses, is accompanied by ridicule. If someone takes a little care of their appearance, they are considered to be "grooming," "youthful," or "acting childish"; and if they let themselves go, they are treated as if they have fallen into senile melancholy or dementia. You lose in terms of health, while others gain in terms of knowledge; this is the deadlock of the euphemistically termed "third age." And the only authentic compensation for it – whatever accumulated wisdom – remains in obscurity.
Arkás ingeniously explored what happens to us after death in "Life After." "The Peers" serves as a kind of "prequel" to that album. It wouldn't be inappropriate to call them "Life Just Before," as they include an equally brilliant list of what happens at the close of human life. The three central characters – Gerasimos, Charalambos, and Zacharias, the dog – represent perfect epitomes of three fundamental attitudes towards death: complete denial, prudent acceptance, or furious compromise.
Complete denial is expressed by the nearly ninety-year-old Charalambos, acceptance by the seventy-five-year-old Gerasimos, and furious compromise by the "peer" (eleven-year-old) dog. "The dog teaches us friendship / but the cat / teaches us about the world," wrote Yiannis Varveris in his last poetry collection. The dog in "The Peers" teaches us the aversion towards the idea that we will soon lose the world.
