The unconventional composition of Gabriel Fauré, Requiem, has become a beloved choice in the repertoire, and here is the vocal score for soloists and SATB choir with piano accompaniment, as edited by Desmond Ratcliff.
Requiem is likely the most famous of Gabriel Fauré's large-scale works, which took approximately 20 years to complete. The entire work consists of seven movements with a total performance time of about 35 minutes. Although Fauré's parents passed away during the early stages of the composition, these tragic events were not the driving force behind the creation of this particular piece.
Equally interesting is that this Requiem does not follow the traditional liturgical text, as the fiery movements 'Dies Irae' and 'Tuba Mirum' have been omitted, while the lyrical 'Pie Jesu' and the transcendent 'Paradisi' are included.
