Bob Crewe is known for writing and producing some of the pivotal records in American popular culture, from "Big Girls Don’t Cry" for the Four Seasons to "Lady Marmalade" for LaBelle. However, his passion for painting and visual arts was a constant balance in the musician's life. This collection includes more than 80 works by Bob Crewe, ranging from his early explorations in abstract expressionism in the 1950s and 1960s to the more complex, orderly compositions of his full-time commitment to painting in the 1990s, accompanied by archival images and documents that reflect Crewe's combined contribution to popular music.
Essays by Jessica May and Peter Plagens explore the evolution of an artist whose influences range from Rauschenberg and Johns to Warhol and Bacon. Legendary record producer Andrew Loog Oldham recounts the period of radical experimentation during which Crewe wrote many of the most memorable pieces of contemporary pop music, while Donald Albrecht's introduction links the many complementary aspects of Crewe's personal and creative life.
