Rumi: Unseen Poems – the second volume of Rumi in the Everyman Pocket Poet series – is a treasure of poems that have never been translated before, researched and translated by Rumi's biographer, Brad Gooch, and the Iranian author, Maryam Mortaz. The 13th-century poet Rumi was trained in Sufism, a mystical tradition of Islam. He founded the Mevlevi order, known as the Whirling Dervishes, who use dance and music as part of their spiritual commitment.
His poetry combines the sacred and the sensual, expressing both ecstatic, divine love and the painful human love for his companion and teacher, Shams of Tabriz. He has maintained great popularity in the West, especially over the past twenty-five years, when a new generation of free translations introduced him to an ever-expanding audience. However, some of these recent translations have taken on more of the character of interpretations by non-Persian speaking authors. The cultural and Islamic references, which are central to understanding Rumi's poetry, have been diminished or omitted. Rumi's poetic output is so extensive that previous academic translators have had to be selective, leaving a rich vein of verses still untapped.
From this basis, Gooch and Mortaz have selected ghazals (short lyrical verses) and rubaiyat (quatrains), aiming for their translation to achieve fidelity to the originals while preserving all the lyrical vitality of Rumi. This book serves as the ideal companion to the first volume of Rumi from Everyman, which showcases the best of 20th-century poetry.
