Description

‘BRITAIN’S FINEST LIVING NATURE WRITER’ - THE TIMES

The book "The Running Hare" is an exceptional narrative that explores the world of wild animals and plants living in traditional fields. As traditional agriculture disappears, many plant and animal species that were once abundant, such as the hare and the harvest mouse, are threatened with extinction.

Robert Lewis Stempel, using poetic language, tells the story of the microorganisms working in the soil, the hawks patrolling the field, and the swallows searching for seeds. The book covers the destruction of the unique and sensitive landscape of the fields, a place full of life and history, located near the villages.

At the same time, the narrative incorporates the experience of a person who takes care of a field using traditional methods, trying to restore its fertility and biodiversity, bringing back old agricultural flowers and animals. Lewis Stempel proves that it is possible to create a safe haven for wild animals, such as the hare.

The book is nominated for the Richard Jefferies Society White Horse Bookshop Prize 2016, and John Lewis-Stempel won the Thwaites Wainwright Prize in 2015 for his work "MEADOWLAND".
