This entirely new edition brings together all the poems by Philip Larkin. In addition to those included in the Collected Poems (1988) and Early Poems and Juvenilia (2005), it also includes unpublished pieces from his manuscripts and notebooks, as well as verses (sometimes provocative, sarcastic, affectionate, and emotional) hidden in his letters. The handwritten and printed sources have been re-examined, providing more information about the text sources and composition dates. Previous references to composition dates have been corrected. Variations in phrasing from Larkin's manuscripts and first editions are recorded. For the first time, the poems are accompanied by extensive commentary. This critically draws on and significantly expands the collective research on Larkin, covering closely related historical contexts, people and places, references and echoes, as well as linguistic usage. Special emphasis is placed on the poet’s comments about his poems, which often outline the conditions that led to the composition of a poem or mention the objectives he pursued. Larkin downplayed his literary quality, but his poetry is enriched with references and echoes to the works of many others. Archie Burnett’s commentary establishes him as a more complex and more literary poet than many readers have suspected.
