Within the overall context of the "crisis," Sionos adeptly analyzes the distinct types of news media, artistic, performative/movement-oriented, self-referential media, and academic discourse. In a truly skillful manner, he combines, at a theoretical level, the Essex School (Laclau, Stavrakakis, and others), biopolitics (Foucault, Agamben), Lacanian social theory (Žižek), media theory, the sociology of emotions, Cybernetics, and, of course, the theory of metamocracy.
The book engages with a substantial volume of factual material, which he analyzes using different methods (lexicometrics, multimodal analysis, communicative framing), in order to achieve the necessary methodological triangulation and thus secure the validity of his conclusions.
A notable virtue of the author is his ability to navigate comfortably at macro-, meso-, and micro-levels of analysis, offering original and pioneering interpretations on an ontological, epistemological, and existential scale.
This is because, on the one hand, he possesses a serious theoretical background that protects him from the trap of "presentism" regarding the scope of his analyses, and on the other hand, he is a proficient user of the qualitative methods he has employed. Based on these, he can and dares to think "outside the box," thereby raising the bar significantly for scholars of political discourse.
