In the autumn of 1914, Europe was at war. The warring powers had already suffered losses on a previously unimaginable scale. On the western and eastern fronts, elaborate strategic plans had collapsed and were replaced by desperate improvisations. In the West, this resulted in the relentless world of trenches, while in the East all eyes were on the old, besieged fortress of Austro-Hungary, Przemyśl.
The siege that unfolded at Przemyśl was the largest of the war. In defending the fortress and battling to liberate it, Austro-Hungary suffered about 800,000 casualties. Almost unknown in the West, it was one of the great turning points of the conflict. If the Russians had broken through, they could have invaded Central Europe, but when the fortress fell, their strength was exhausted and they could not advance further.
