What can't neuroscience tell us about ourselves? Since the introduction of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the 1990s, brain scans have been used to understand and manipulate voters, assess guilt in court cases, and analyze musical ability to romantic love. However, despite the groundbreaking insights offered by brain scans and other neurotechnologies, the idea that these are the most important way to answer the mysteries of psychology is misleading and potentially dangerous. In the book "Brainwashed," psychiatrist Sally Satel and psychologist Scott O. Lilienfeld reveal how many practical applications of human neuroscience overlook its limitations and complexities, blurring, rather than facilitating, the many factors that shape our behavior and identity. According to Satel and Lilienfeld, brain scans are useful but often ambiguous representations of an incredibly complex system. Each area of the brain is involved in a plethora of experiences and interacts with other areas, so the activation of one area in an fMRI as a response to a stimulus does not automatically indicate a specific sensation or capture the higher cognitive functions that arise from these interactions. The narrow focus on the brain's physical processes also assumes that our subjective experiences can be explained solely by biology. As Satel and Lilienfeld explain, this neurocentric view of the mind risks undermining our most deeply held ideas about autonomy, free will, and personal responsibility, putting us in danger of making harmful mistakes, whether in the courtroom, interrogation room, or addiction treatment clinics. A provocative narrative about our obsession with neuroscience, "Brainwashed" brilliantly illuminates what modern neuroscience and brain imaging can and cannot tell us about ourselves, providing a much-needed reminder of the many factors that make us who we are.
