Description & Specifications

The book Inventing the Individual by Larry Siedentop, distinguished author of Democracy in Europe, is an excellent revision of how our moral beliefs were formed and their impact today on Western society. In this book, it describes how a moral revolution in the early millennia A.D. - the discovery of human freedom and its universal potential - led to a social revolution in the West. The invention of a new, equal social role, the individual, gradually replaced the claims of family, tribe, and caste as the basis of social organization.

Siedentop invites us to rethink the evolution of the ideas on which modern societies and governments are built, arguing that the core of our belief system originated much earlier than we think. The roots of liberalism - belief in individual freedom, in the fundamental moral equality of individuals, that equality should be the basis of a legal system, and that only a representative form of government is suitable for such a society - all these, Siedentop argues, originated from Christian thinkers of the Middle Ages, who drew on the moral revolution carried out by the early Church. The arguments of canonical jurists, theologians, and philosophers from the eleventh to the fourteenth century, not the Renaissance, laid the foundations for liberal democracy.

The book has received rave reviews, with John Gray describing it as "one of the most stimulating books of political theory published in many years," and Paul Lay calling it "a brave, brilliant, and graceful defense of the Western tradition." Critics consider it "astonishing and enlightening," offering a thorough analysis of its philosophical roots.
