A fantastic new standalone work by Eddings, set in an entirely new magical world. Our hero, Althalos, is a thief, armed robber, and occasional killer, and he is hired by a mysterious cloaked stranger named Gendt to steal a book from the House at the End of the World. In the House at the End of the World, he finds a talking cat… in the same room as the book described by Gendt. What he cannot find when he enters the house is the door he came in through. Only 2467 years and an ice age later, Althalos reappears with the cat, Amy. He has read the book written by the god Deios, whose evil brother, Daeva, is trying to remake the world. Amy is actually their sister and is trying to save the world with Althalos's help. It is not an easy task. First, there is a quest to uncover the magical dagger that will allow Amy to gather her necessary team of helpers: Eliar (a young soldier), Andin (leader of a small country), Behit (a priest in a black robe), Ger (a ten-year-old orphan), Leitha (a telepathic witch). Fights follow against Gelta, the Queen of the Night, and Daeva’s troops, which include many cunning maneuvers in and out of the House, where the Doors can open anywhere at any time. Daeva has his own Doors too. When Daeva cannot win in battle, he tries revolution. When Dveia (Amy) cannot win another way, Althalos will convince her to lie, deceive, and steal—offsetting the lessons in truth, justice, and morality that Amy has taught him for some time. The existence of the world hangs by a thread, and love cannot guarantee that it will triumph in this glorious epic fantasy.
