The history of Walther PP, PPK, and P 38 pistols has been shaped by innovation and their use in the military and police forces. The Walther PP (Polizeipistole), introduced in 1929, was designed for the law enforcement market and was used by many European countries in the 1930s. Its smaller sibling, the PPK, appeared in 1931, offering greater concealment capability for covert missions. The Walther P 38, issued in 1940, was intended to replace the P 08 Luger pistol, although it never fully supplanted it in the German forces. All the above models gained extensive and diverse service worldwide after 1945. Today, the PP and PPK continue to be manufactured, while the P 38 reappeared as the P1 and supplied the West German forces from 1963 until 2004. In this study, acclaimed expert John Walter evaluates the roots, development, and legacy of these three prominent semi-automatic pistols.
