Description

An exhilarating thriller that explores themes of power, information, secrecy, and war in the 20th century. From the author of the trilogy 'The Baroque Cycle' and Seveneves.

In his epic work, Neal Stephenson delves into the secret histories of nations and the personal obsessions of individuals, decrypting with impressive skill the forces that shaped this century.

In 1942, Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse - a mathematical genius and new Captain of the U.S. Navy - is assigned to Unit 2702, a group so secret that few know of its existence. Some of them have names like Churchill and Roosevelt.

Their mission is to keep the Nazis oblivious to the fact that the Allies have decoded the legendary Enigma code of the enemy. Waterhouse becomes involved in a cryptographic chess game against his German adversary - where each move determines the fate of thousands.

In modern times, Waterhouse’s grandson, Randy, is trying to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia, where encrypted data can be stored and exchanged without oppression and control. Together with the fearless Amy, Randy seeks to secretly recover a sunken Nazi submarine that holds the key to keeping the data haven dream alive.

However, their plan brings to light a massive conspiracy rooted in Unit 2702 - and an insurmountable Nazi code named Arethusa. There are two ways the situation can unfold: towards untold riches and a future of personal and digital freedom - or towards a total nightmare...

Profound and prophetic, hypnotic and hyperactive, Cryptonomicon is a work of great art, thought, and creative daring, the product of a brilliant imagination working at white-hot intensity.
