It is about to become the scene of one of the most remarkable stories of bravery, battle, and disgust: the siege of Malta. Created in the Holy Land during the 11th century, a small group of knights had long sought a homeland. Driven from their land by Ottoman power, they ended up in Malta, from where they watched Turks and pirates attack the Spanish Empire. As news arrived from Constantinople that Malta was in the plans of the Ottoman Empire, all of Europe watched as a force of more than 30,000 men besieged the island — which had only 500 knights and a few thousand local soldiers.
