The theatrical adaptation by playwright and novelist Nigel Williams of William Golding's story was professionally presented for the first time by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in July 1995. It is an adaptation that is "almost faithful to the spirit of the novel," and the theatrical form fits particularly well with the ritualistic aspects of the story, such as chanting, dancing, marching around the victim, and the devastation of the fire. The result is a fable with infinite allegories. This special edition, suitable for schools and amateur groups, contains the full text of the play, as well as notes on directing, a complete list of props, and lighting and sound instructions.
