Volume 1 of the Everyman Shakespeare series, published in 1992, includes the four principal tragedies: HAMLET, KING LEAR, OTHELLO, and MACBETH. The texts of the plays, authoritatively edited, are accompanied by extensive bibliographies, a chronology of Shakespeare's life and times, as well as a supportive introduction in which Professor Tony Tanner examines the evolution of Shakespeare as a tragic poet, while also providing detailed discussions of the individual plays. This is the only two-volume edition of the tragedies with such comprehensive supporting material and will form part of a complete collection of Shakespeare (works and poems) in eight volumes.
