Star anise, or Illicium verum, is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to northeastern Vietnam and southwestern China.

It is a spice that has a flavor similar to that of anise, derived from the star-shaped pericarp of the fruits of Illicium velum, which are harvested just before they ripen.
