Kanuma planting substrate is a granular material of Japanese origin with a naturally acidic pH, suitable for azaleas and other acid-loving bonsai. It retains available moisture while remaining permeable to water and air, helping roots maintain access to water without the substrate becoming compacted.

It consists of pure Kanuma, with no added fertilizer, and can be used on its own or mixed with other materials to adjust moisture retention and acidity. If visible fine dust is present, it can be sifted or lightly rinsed without prolonged soaking.
