General Information on Spirometry

Spirometry is a test conducted to determine the functional status of the lungs. For the test, the pulmonologist uses a device called a spirometer, which can accurately measure the amount of air retained and exchanged by the lungs.

The test is used to identify the causes of shortness of breath and/or to rule out obstructive and restrictive lung diseases. It is most commonly used to diagnose and provide precise information about the nature and severity of respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and pulmonary fibrosis.

Additionally, spirometry can measure the response of a patient undergoing treatment with inhaled medications. Spirometry is also useful in the preoperative assessment of breathing when a patient is about to undergo surgery under general anesthesia.

The test is completely painless and requires only the cooperation of the patient, lasting no longer than 10 minutes.
