Spirometry in general

Spirometry is a test conducted to determine the functional status of the lungs. For the test, the pulmonologist uses a device called a spirometer, which can measure with great accuracy the air that is retained and moved by the lungs.

The test is used to identify the causes of shortness of breath and/or to exclude obstructive and restrictive lung diseases. It is most commonly used to diagnose and provide accurate information on the nature and severity of respiratory diseases, such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and pulmonary fibrosis.

Additionally, spirometry can measure the response of a patient undergoing treatment with inhaled medications. Spirometry is also useful in preoperative respiratory assessment when a patient is about to undergo a procedure with general anesthesia.

The test is completely painless and requires only the cooperation of the examinee, and it takes no longer than 10 minutes.
