The speaking tracheostomy tube is used in cases where the vocal cords are intact, allowing exhalation to be diverted towards the oral cavity and enabling speech. The tracheostomy tube can be plastic or silver, with or without an air chamber (cuff).

Tracheostomy is called the surgical opening of the trachea and the placement of a special tube inside it, for the purpose of ventilating the patient, bypassing the upper respiratory tract. It is the artificial opening in the anterior wall of the trachea.

The tracheostomy tube is the most essential tool in the daily life of patients with tracheostomy. Depending on the case, the use of a different type of tracheostomy tube is recommended, with the presence of the tube being temporary or permanent.

Balloon or cuff: Not present in all tracheostomies. When inflated, it holds the tube in place and prevents air leakage towards the oropharynx. It is connected with a thin tube to an external pilot balloon, which indicates if the internal balloon is inflated.
