Tracheostomy: A tracheostomy is the surgical opening of the trachea for the placement of a tracheostomy tube, intended for patient ventilation. It can be emergency or planned, and its duration can be temporary or permanent.
Post-operative care includes cleaning the incision with sterile saline solution and placing a clean dressing if needed. Cutting gauze is prohibited to avoid irritation or infection. A dressing is necessary in the first 24 hours or in case of discharge or bleeding.
Patients may require a tracheostomy tube when intubated with a ventilator for more than 5-10 days or in cases of loss of consciousness.
