D-PRE Class-A Preamplifiers & Input Circuits

The Yamaha MG20 incorporates 16 discrete D-PRE microphone preamps, which operate in a Class-A architecture with an Inverted Darlington circuit. This design uses two transistors in succession at each stage, providing increased power with low impedance and minimal distortion. The preamps deliver natural bass and clear high frequencies without coloration. The input channels feature 26dB Pad switches for handling high-level line signals, as well as an 80Hz High-Pass Filter.

1-Knob Analog Compressors & Equalization

Channels 1 to 8 feature independent analog 1-Knob Compression. Using a single rotary control, users can adjust the threshold, ratio, and makeup gain simultaneously, making it easy to shape the dynamics of vocals, bass, and percussion. The mono channels are equipped with a 3-band equalizer with sweepable midrange (250Hz–5kHz), providing precise control over the sound spectrum.

Signal Routing & Subgroups

In terms of routing, the MG20 offers 4 independent auxiliary outputs (AUX Sends) for connecting external monitors or effects processors, as well as 4 subgroups (Group Busses) with dedicated outputs for grouping channels before sending them to the main Stereo Bus. Each channel features dedicated assign switches, PFL, Mute, and indicator LEDs.

Metal Construction & Rackmount Ergonomics

The MG20’s chassis is made of steel and is resistant to vibrations and mechanical stress. Its internal circuit layout separates the power supply from the audio signals, minimizing inductive noise. The power supply is built in (Universal Power Supply, 100V–240V), allowing direct connection with an IEC cable. The package includes special metal brackets (rack-mount brackets), allowing installation in a standard 19-inch rack.
