Ricardo Reis, a poet and doctor, returns to his homeland after many years of self-imposed exile in Brazil. Lisbon is dull and colorless, appearing chimerical. Instead of seeing patients, he wanders the streets of the city for hours. He craves the elusive Marcenda, a young lady whose left hand has mysteriously become paralyzed, but it is Lydia who shares the bed with him, the hotel maid where he is staying. Until an old friend, Fernando Pessoa, visits him, still wearing the suit in which he was buried a few weeks earlier.
We are at the dawn of 1936, a new year that is the real protagonist of this novel. Meanwhile, the history of the era is being written, with the rise of fascism in Germany, Italy, and Portugal, as well as the struggle of the unstable democracy in Spain. Reis, one of Pessoa's heteronyms, will be tempted to live and act but will remain a spectator of the world.
