Orestes, a doctoral candidate in Paris, is preparing an incisive treatise titled New Testament, through which he evangelizes a new religion.
On March 25, at the grave of Korai, he delivers a speech to his compatriots and classmates, trying to convince them to participate in the preparation of a great spiritual revolution. They mock him, thereby obstructing his important speech.
Among Orestes' close circle are Chrysoula, a young woman without will who cohabitates with him, and Gorgias, an ancestry-stricken philologist of advanced age who is secretly in love with her. All three are utterly broken individuals. Indeed, they are beautiful, but so frivolous that the crushing forces of society will shatter their dreamy hearts, leaving them as broken souls.
The Broken Souls is the first novel written by Nikos Kazantzakis, in Paris during the first half of 1908. With this work, he brings to life characters who collapse in the face of hardships, providing an example to be avoided.
Nietzsche taught him that man must gaze into the abyss without seeking comfort, to accept it without fear, and to fight until the end. And when they stepped out into the noise and bustle of the street, their hearts caught. How alone they were in such a crowd! No one knew them. And if they were to fall dead to the ground now, no one would stop to grieve for them.
Everyone passed in front of them and no one looked at them, and if by chance someone bumped into them, they would see him immediately stop, coldly and very politely take off his hat, apologize to them, and hurry away without waiting for a response.
