Description

The composite construction method, as a system for building structures and civil engineering works, is particularly popular worldwide. This is because it can efficiently combine the properties of the two main materials that compose it, structural steel and reinforced concrete, with the help of the appropriate shear connection. This combination results in an economical and reliable design solution while simultaneously reducing construction time.

For this reason, the evolution of construction in Greece, combined with the adoption of the regulatory framework of the Eurocodes, systematically leads the engineering community to choose the design of composite structures. Particularly in building projects, the applications encountered mainly involve office buildings and large industrial halls, as well as residential buildings, often in conjunction with prefabrication systems.

This edition presents, as simply and understandably as possible, the basic principles and design methodology of composite constructions within the framework of Eurocode 4, as it is based on the experience from teaching the corresponding course and related scientific research. At the same time, it describes through practical design examples the analysis and methodology for dimensioning these structures within the context of the Eurocodes.

These examples can assist both students and engineers in understanding the design methodology, starting from the design of individual members such as beams and columns to the design of entire floors of buildings or bridge decks. Particularly, the engineer engaged in the design and implementation of modern projects can optimally analyze the main components of a composite structure, achieve better simulation with suitable software on computers, and reduce computation time, often meeting design requirements in a BIM (Building Information Modeling) environment.

This edition is complemented by the provision of useful auxiliary tables for the appropriate and easy selection of the cooperating materials and their parameters, so that related calculations can be performed more easily and lead to correct and safe results.
