Orwell was afraid of the people who would ban books. Huxley was afraid that there would be no reason to ban a book because no one would be willing to read it.
Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would overload us with information to the point that we would become passive and selfish creatures. Orwell feared that the truth would be kept secret. Huxley feared that the truth would be drowned in an ocean of confusion.
Orwell feared that we would develop a culture of subservience. Huxley feared that we would develop a culture of banality, engaging only in activities akin to the orgy-porgy, the centrifugal puppy, and the sensuous movies.
In short, Orwell feared that we would be destroyed by the things we hate. Huxley feared that we would be destroyed by the things we love. This book examines the possibility that Huxley is right, not Orwell.
