The KKE's attempt at hegemony in Greece during the German, Italian, and Bulgarian occupation and the organized assault to seize power in liberated Greece was orchestrated from the outset by a closed circle of power under the then Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill.
Acting with complete secrecy and contrary to the official state policy of Great Britain, Churchill and his associates sought to impose a regime in Greece that would be "a pale red affair, in the style of English socialism," akin to Tito's regime in Yugoslavia.
The "socialist" regime under the KKE would fall within the sphere of influence of Great Britain and be independent of the Soviet Union, according to the provisions of the early secret British-Soviet agreements and the arrangement that followed at Yalta.
The main operational arm of this strategy was the Political Warfare Executive, the "daughter" Political Warfare Agency.
