He soon arrived at Cardoné and entered the door at number 17. The concierge looked at him from her post and greeted him half-heartedly, while he responded with a cheerful good morning. Then he climbed the stairs to the third-floor apartment. Standing and waiting for someone to answer his doorbell, he softly sang the melody again. Raoul Dobreig felt exceptionally cheerful this morning. The door was opened by an elderly Frenchwoman, and her wrinkled face was creased by a smile as soon as she saw who her visitor was. "Good morning, monsieur." "Good morning, Élise," said Raoul. He entered the hall, taking off his gloves. "Madam is expecting me, isn't she?" he asked, turning his head.
