Description

The leading historical work in the Cambridge University Press series New Approaches to the History of Africa.

Fully revised to include the history and studies of Africa from the new millennium, this important book continues to help the reader understand the historical processes that have shaped Africa's position in the world. As a history of decolonization and independence, it allows readers to discern what exactly the political independence signified and what it did not, as well as how individuals sought to change the ways in which men and women, peasants and workers, religious and local leaders lived, worked, and interacted with each other.

Covering the transformation of Africa from a continent marked by colonialism to a continent filled with independent states, Frederick Cooper traces over time the "development question," examining how colonial regimes first and then African elites sought to change society in their own way. He shows how people in cities and villages tried to find their path in an unequal world, through times of hope, despair, renewed possibilities, and ongoing uncertainty. Looking beyond the debate over who or what may be to blame for Africa's recurring crises, Cooper explores alternatives for the future.

What they are saying about the book:

"Cooper's research is the most thorough, clear, and engaging text we have on the history of Africa during and after late colonialism. Africa since 1940 combines skillful historical narrative with sharp and insightful examination of the continent's political problems. This new and significantly revised edition is the starting point for any reader wanting to understand the dynamics of Africa's recent past." –David M. Anderson, University of Warwick

"Now more than ever, we need Cooper's book, with its clarity, absence of romanticism, synthetic ability, and perspective. It offers all of us scholars of Africa's past a common vocabulary for reflecting on history and future." –Derek R. Peterson, University of Michigan
