Description

A feel-good novel about friendship and books. Bookseller Karl Kolchov delivers books to the homes of some of his customers in the evenings after the bookstore closes, traversing the picturesque streets of the city. With these customers, he shares a special bond - they are almost friends - and he serves, in a way, as their connection to the outside world.

However, when Karl suddenly loses his job, it will take the power of books and a nine-year-old girl to help them all, including Karl, find the courage to reach out to one another… Light-hearted, tender, touching, and bookish, Carsten Henn's novel reminds us that we only have each other – and books.

Karl Kolchov is not an ordinary 75-year-old. A lover of books and a former bookseller, he lives bound, one might say, to an earlier time, with an unprecedented romanticism. Thus, he works in his mentor Gustav’s bookstore – and stays there despite realizing the new manager and Gustav’s daughter’s dislike for him.

Because Kolchov, alone in life, has not learned to live any other way. He is solitary, and his friends are the books. The books and his peculiar customers: lonely people themselves, each trapped in their own larger or smaller drama, who have established a peculiar habit: they wait every week for the bookseller of their hearts to bring them the right book home.

Karl's visits and choices prove to be beneficial for these people. Especially when a strange nine-year-old enters the scene, the whirlwind girl with mature thoughts and courage, who, also seeking an outlet for her own loneliness (orphaned by her mother, with a father who is present-absent and facing teasing at school), follows Karl everywhere and changes, with her carefree childhood, the lives of his customers.

At that very moment, in that particular bookstore, the question that defines the existence of every bookstore could be heard: "Do you have any good books to recommend?" The voice belonged to Ursel Schäfer, a woman who knew exactly what the characteristics of a good book were. First, a good book would grip you and you couldn't put it down until your eyes closed from sleepiness. Second, it would make you cry at least three or four times during the reading. Third, it had no fewer than three hundred pages, but no more than three hundred and eighty. And fourth, it never had a green cover. Books with green covers were not to be trusted; she knew this from personal experience.
