Description

A book that combines history, art, and personal narratives, offering an overview of over two centuries of tattoo history, intertwining the lives of tattoo artists with their struggles and triumphs, the risks of their professional activity, and their artistic courage. Over the past four decades, Henk Schiffmacher has dedicated his heart and soul to his collection, gathering designs, tattoo designs, photos, and objects from around the world. Each chapter of the book presents many unknown items from this collection, including lithographs, engravings, tattoo tools, original designs, as well as tattoo designs known as flash, among them very rare vintage flash sheets from significant early tattoo artists in the West. The variety of tattoos on the global scene is recorded through hundreds of images, including traditional Māori tattoos and those of the inhabitants of the South Pacific islands, the ancient traditions of Asia, and the roots of classic tattoos in Europe and the United States. The book also includes a dozen original illustrations by Schiffmacher in his unique style. Schiffmacher offers an interesting perspective on the history of tattoos through his personal memories and wild adventures. Through this book, we learn not only about the history of tattoos but also about the adventures behind creating one of the largest tattoo collections in the world, from a self-taught artist who loves art and its innovators.
